In 1957, two rival neighborhood gangs of young boys play pranks on each other in the town of Dollarhide, Texas. The alternate revenge-attacks escalate to a serious wager: whichever group can earn more in three days keeps all earnings from both gangs. A challenge baseball game bet also is set up, with the losers forfeiting their bats, balls, and gloves to the victors. Practically everyone in Dollarhide is taking sides and making bets, too. The grand opening of a Hypermarket - a discount store that sells almost everything - is coincident with the boys' wager-earnings window and will be a major factor for the earnings bet. A trio of Korean War veterans are desperate for another chance at a normal life after suffering several years of psychological trauma from combat atrocities. To finance their new start, they devise a precision plan to rob the Hyperstore at the end of grand-opening weekend. Just before the robbery, the vets try to relax by watching the challenge baseball game. The boys' activities, the Hyperstore opening, the heist, and the soldiers' getaway collide in unexpected ways. Details of the story reflect the texture of a small West Texas town in the late 1950's.
