Best non-fiction, objective crime book I’ve read in quite some time.

As a former Attorney General for the SDNY he is exceptionally well-versed in the practice of law and the idiosyncrasies of law vis-a-vis the SDNY. It’s also about managing and motivating your staff, staff who have incredibly difficult and traumatic cases. But reading the book is like talking to one of your friends who is crazy smart but up for grabbing a beer and just telling stories. The book is about cases they’ve prosecuted but more importantly it’s about the cases they don’t prosecute and the office mission of justice over wins. Preet is (or was) a smart, effective, thoughtful AG. He always engaged and instilled in his staff the concept of justice. Not revenge, but justice. Preet’s investigator, John O’Malley, (a 20-year homicide cop before joining SDNY) became aware of a young man who was likely wrongly convicted. John ruffled some feathers, but he also got justice. I found out that Preet is persona non grata in one country and a hero in another. One of the most interesting, contemporary law books out there. He works his son’s Rubik cube obsession into solving crime (and not in the way you’d think.) That alone should hook you but if not you should buy it because it’s a seriously great book from clearly a great man.
