When Katie's teacher moves in next-door, Katie can't believe her bad luck! Nothing could be worse than your own teacher living next-door-or could it? Mrs. Derkman hates dogs, and she wants the dogs on their street to be kept on leashes at all times! Katie is furious. Then the magic wind blows, turning Katie into her own dog, Pepper. Will she be able to convince her teacher that dogs are not all bad?
The "Katie Kazoo" series is about an elementary age girl who received a granting of her wish to be someone else. In each book in this series she experiences (temporarily) a change into someone else, and during the period of change she usually creates a conflict that she has to work to resolve after she turns into Katie again. My daughters (similar in age to Katie) love these books and usually consume them in a single day (or a single sitting). The conflict is low-grade and typically funny or light-hearted. "Doggone It!" is about Katie turning into her dog Pepper. Pepper is a little hard to control (Katie or otherwise), and the plot here centers around what a nuisance this dog is. Katie finds a way to make a dog lover of those who are otherwise offended by Pepper's ways. Not bad in this series.
Perfect Chapter Books for First and Second Graders

My daughter is an advanced reader in her school. She is in 3rd grade this year. She read the whole series of Katie Kazoo when she was in the beginning of first grade. The books were printed very spacious in between lines and with colorful pictures, which makes it very easy and interesting to read. My daughter developed a very good reading habit from Katie Kazoo. She even remembers everything that happened in each book and be able to make connections in school reports. My son who is in 2nd grade this year also has read the series. Because the reading level in this series is just right for him. He can grasp the story and be able to retell and make connections in school. My son didn't use to like reading. Eventhough some people might think Katie Kazoo is only for girls, the stories do have boy characters which makes it very neutral. Katie Kazoo's best friend is a boy named Jeremy. My son finally picks up a good reading habit from his first chapter books series. Thanks for Nancy Krulik. I hope Nancy will publish more Katie Kazoo and I will keep on buying. So far, I have the complete set from #1 to #26. Also I bought the Special Limited Editions ones about Christmas, Camping, Fourth Grade, etc.
