How difficult can it be to put a dog into a kayak and paddle off? In all honesty, it's often not difficult for the humans involved; but, sometimes it's very difficult for the dog. For example, I often see dogs struggling to stand on plastic kayak decks. These dogs' owners probably don't know that a simple piece of indoor/outdoor mat or carpet could potentially transform the kayak deck into a more safe and secure place for their dog. However, witnessing a dog slipping around on a plastic deck is by no means an indicator of an owner's lack of love or consideration for their pet. Quite the contrary, the very fact that the dog is out there with them suggests that they love their furry friends very much, and had they known that this piece of mat/carpet could possibly make the dog's kayaking experience safer, many of these owners would have added this feature to their kayak. In turn, their little paddling companions could have a more enjoyable and safe adventure out on the water with them. The internet can be a wonderful, and at other times, inept way to educate ourselves about things we wish to do with our pets. Every person who has paddled with a dog can put a video online and say this is how it's done. While it might be how they did it, it's not necessarily all there is to it. If we search and find the same information repeated again and again, it becomes easy to think that there is nothing more to be learned. There are certain elements of kayaking with a dog that are best left to the dog to figure out; such as, learning to balance and how to get in and out of the kayak. However, there are other safety and training issues that need to be specifically addressed by the paddler, and only an experienced paddler should be kayaking with a dog. It is unfair to include a dog in the kayaking experience if the paddler is not confident, experienced, and well informed. Kayaks are not currently made with dogs in mind, so features like the one I mentioned above cannot be safely done to do to all kayaks, and not all kayak decks are safe for dogs to stand on. It is ultimately up to you to determine what is and isn't safe for you and your dog. This book was written with the intent to inform you and help you make those important decisions! I want you, and your dog to be safe and have the most positive kayaking experiences possible! This book is priced so that every paddler can afford it. The proceeds of this book will go towards further educating and inspiring paddlers through my website, KayakingCTwithLou.com, as well as, articles, videos, events, site reviews, and additional books.
