The future is here, and specialized groups of California's criminal element have expanded their talents in pursuit of dishonest dollars. Kidnapping humans supported their lavish lifestyles for dozens of years, but severe penalties, dealing with weeping victims, and endless negotiations were not what they considered time well spent.
To the dismay of millions, an unexpected trend emerged. These same criminal masterminds began kidnapping pets of the rich and famous instead of their arrogant, spoiled children. Punishments were less harsh, and animals told no tales. To combat these crimes, California formed a special agency, the Pet Abduction Division.
One group of detectives, nicknamed the Mudhounds, quickly rose to the top. Led by Conner Mudrick, a disgraced former dogcatcher, they crisscrossed the state in helicopters and SUVs, determined to keep their perfect case solving record intact.
Dogs were their specialty, and their success was the envy of agencies far and wide. Conner's arrogance and merciless style soon became a disadvantage, however. The deeper he dug, the more secrets he uncovered, and the very people he worked so hard to help turned against him, seeking revenge. Would Conner end up in prison and become the downfall of the very detective agency he helped create? Would his relationship with one of the most peculiar women in the state end his marriage? The very same woman who held the key to his freedom and future?
