Does it pay to go to school

Indigenous Australians have a 17-year shorter life expectancy, higher jobless rates, and are 11 times more likely to be in jail than non-Indigenous Australians. Dr. Ken Henry said that policy action has failed, but there have been improvements in some areas. However, progress is slow when compared to the possibilities that could be created by a fast-growing economy and a lot of money coming into the government. The organizations that joined the Indigenous Governance Awards2 show that there is a chance for highly effective solutions. The Indigenous government Awards are a joint project between Reconciliation Australia and BHP Billiton to encourage, reward, and spread best practices in Indigenous government.

Canada, New Zealand, and the United States have made significant improvements in the lives of their Indigenous populations. In 2001, 18.2% of Indigenous people had a degree or certificate from a school beyond high school, but improving education is the best way for economically and socially disadvantaged adults and children to get out of poverty.
