From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining--an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is " a] vivid frightscape" (The New York Times)--also a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance's sanity, as his paranormal gift known as "the shining" opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook--and his father's legacy of alcoholism and violence--kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname "Doctor Sleep" by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone--who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining--the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan's own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl's soul and survival...
Dr. Sleep picks up on the life of Dan Torrance, the little boy protagonist from The Shining, as an adult who’s had more than his share of struggles, including with alcohol abuse. He has finally achieved some years of sobriety and stability when he begins psychically communicating with a young girl who also “shines”. Unfortunately, a group of nomadic RV people also become aware of her and are after her ability; they travel around the nation torturing and killing kids with “shine” in order to inhale it as life-prolonging “steam”. Dan and some friends become involved with protecting the girl from this group. There are frequent references to people, places, and events from “The Shining”, but “Dr. Sleep” is a separate story on its own so it would not be necessary to read them in order, although undoubtedly it would improve the experience. As usual, King’s characters come to life on the page and the story is masterfully told. “Dr. Sleep” does not achieve the atmospheric tension of its predecessor, but how could you possibly top being snowed in at a haunted hotel on an isolated Colorado mountaintop for creepiness? Despite that, the book is well-written and entertaining, yet one more of King’s many legendary contributions to the horror genre that is destined to entertain readers for generations.
Solid Follow Up.

When i decided to check out the sequel to the beloved the shining i was set it just wouldn’t be as good almost like a disappointment but half way through i concluded that it didn’t have to be as good as the shining it’s it’s own story and it tells said story very well there are some nice throwbacks to the overlook but Doctor Sleep is in a realm of it’s own and that’s exactly where it should be

The Shining has always been my favorite book and this is the first time I’ve read the sequel. I can say that it’s not as good as the first book but definitely a great read. Danny now Dan as an adult the story continues and boy, was it a thrilling read! If you read the first you have to read the second. I recommend this book for sure but only if you read The Shinning first.

I love Stephen King's novels. I read the Shining in High school, and watched the film adaptation years ago. When Dr. Sleep came out I was so excited. This book did not disappoint. Another brilliant book by horror legend Stephen King.

This book is a good follow up to The Shining. I couldn't put it down. It is interesting to hear what happens to Danny after they leave the Overlook.
