Wonderfully Eye-Opening

Bible study, while faith deepening for the student, is challenging work. Harder yet can be the discussion that follows when you realize that not everyone got the same message you did from the same chapter and verse you read! Arguments can result, relationships are strained, fear can get ahold of you and make you doubt yourself, others, and even the Bible. Southwick's book opens the eye to the realization that we read from a filter built by our life, our experiences, our upbringing, and it shapes us far beyond what we realize. That news isn't bad, rather, it's freeing because when we acknowledge that truth for ourselves we can then move to acknowledge it in others. Southwick shows the reader how to move beyond the fear of studying and discussing scripture into the richness of sharing the meaning it brings to our individual and corporate lives. Real dialog then begins with open hearts and minds. Southwick has provided discussion aides at the end of each chapter to facilitate the "eye-opening" process. In the course of using these discussion tools for her book, the reader is gaining practice for using similar tools for Bible study discussion. This book is helpful for personal study and would be a great tool for groups to use as a pre-course to group Bible Study.
