Very cute and so is the title of the book!

I laughed while reading this novel and the romantic ending was too sweet

Bi-Racial in the South

Jen Taylor lives in Dixieland Arkasas-the product of a Japanese American mother and a European-American father. This leads Jen to some interesting dilemas as some people assume that she is Latin American or when people find out her middle name (Nakamura) they make fun of it. Jen spent much of her childhood in love with-and trying to win Kevin Peterson-to no avail. Later Jen, who is a T.V. producer gets a shock when she gets an invite to his wedding to her blond haired blue eyed cousin Lucy. Jen convinces her friend Riley to come to the wedding with her and the stuff that happens along the way make Dixieland Sushi an interesting book to read.

Fun and flashback wonderful!

I loved this book. Not only did it keep me in stitches, it also brought back so many memories of the 80s pop culture. You certainly do not have to be Asian to connect to the characters. We all have had crushes, feeling not belonging in school, ashamed or embarrassed by a relative... I loved how this book was written as well, it was easy to read ( 3 days) Cara writes with such great humor that many times my husband asked what I was laughing at. Get this book if you want to re-live the 80s a little!

Couldn't Stop Laughing!

Anyone who remembers the 80's will laugh out loud reading Dixieland Sushi. Jen Nakumura Taylor is a TV News producer in Chicago but she has to make a road trip back home for her cousin Lucy's wedding in Dixieland. Jen drags her friend Riley (aka The Collins for his resemblance to both Firth and Farrell) to the wedding. Throughout the trip she recalls growing up in her half Japanese half white family in the South. She also reminisces about Mr. Miyagi, jelly shoes, friendship bracelets, Dallas and Kevin Gibson, her first crush. Kevin will also be at the wedding because he happens to be the groom! Scandal is sure to ensue. I knew I would love the book after reading the first page involving roller-skating, Queen and sushi. Lockwood alternates the story between present day and the 80's with ease. Her writing style is light and fun. Perfect novel to put you in a good mood.

Awesome read!

An awesome read! Lockwood does it again with book #3 - tying a girl's big 3: family, love & career together. From childhood experiences to adulthood realities, Lockwood brings her story together with bursts of laughter and geniune humor. Reader's will cheer for "Jen" from her embarassing childhood experiences, grade-school crush, office crush and insane-but-normal family. Who doesn't remember Mr. Miyagi's words of wisdom?

Absolutely Hilarious

While I've read all of Lockwood's novels, this one is my favorite to date. She seamlessly inserts flashbacks into the story (which are hysterical I might add) - done in such a way that you simply can't wait until you get to the next chapter. It's a great story about the importance (and insanity) of family. Mark my words; this will be THE summer read of 2005.
