As shown in my book on the Catholic Church's Marriage Dilemmas: Historical Reflections, the Church has grudgingly admitted even from early times the possibility of the dissolution of the marriage bond and the possibility of remarriage while still preaching overtly the indissolubility of the marriage bond. In other words, as the old adage says it all: Exceptions prove the rule. In fact, all rules allow exceptions. Indeed, the divorced-and-remarried Catholic couples do have access to the reception of the sacrament of Eucharist.
