During the nineteen-sixties, four people fatefully come together to investigate the provocative beliefs of an eccentric clairvoyant - the very four people he obsessively believes once existed together in Victorian Nottingham.

Subsequent research inexorably draws a hesitant Arthur into the shadowy world of clairvoyance and s ance, during which time he eventually recognises his own psychic abilities, embarking on a journey that brings its own alarming consequences.
