Danny Murray is a young man possessed. The product of an abusive household, he and his little sister endure a series of horrors as they are bumped from one foster home to another before 14-year-old... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Distant Runner is the story of two interwoven lives. Gabe Seward is a veteran runner with past elite credentials, and Danny Murray is a teenager with the potential to become the best distance runner in history bar none. Both grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and faced extreme hardships growing up. Gabe overcame these barriers to become a highly admired contributor to society. Much of the suspense of the novel comes from watching whether Danny will be able to overcome the obstacles life has set before him. You like running? There's lots of exciting running in Distant Runner - killer workouts vividly described, entertaining road races, and several track races with world record attempts. You like your novels spiced with mystery, sex and violence? Distant Runner is for you. The lead characters come alive, mostly behaving nobly but occasionally behaving badly to the consternation of the reader. Is there a happy ending? You'll need to read the book to find out! For Houston runners and readers, there's a huge bonus. Much of the action takes place in Houston and it's all described in detail from a runner's perspective. Danny and Gabe train in Memorial Park, along Buffalo Bayou, in River Oaks. It's all great fun while being a quick and easy read.
Is a world record the answer?

What's amazing about Distant Runner is that an interest in running is no prerequisite for enjoying what really is an exquisitely crafted novel. The protagonist is Danny Murray, a disturbed child prodigy who, on a lonely road out of Eugene Oregon meets Gabe Seward, a former Olympic Trials runner. Glikin skilfully draws the reader into their outwardly different yet spiritually similar worlds. When reading Distant Runner I was taken on quite an unexpected journey. The unpredictability of the plot is what draws us in. You don't have to be a runner to enjoy Distant Runner. It's a novel that will appeal to all readers who love a great story.

Glikin's outdone himself with Distant Runner. It has something for everyone -- mystery, romance, history, adventure -- you name it, you'll find it in this exciting book. While it's considered to be a runner's novel, it goes way beyond that. If you read Slinger and liked it, you'll love Distant Runner.

I stumbled upon this by accident while shopping for a copy of Glikin's "Slinger Sanchez" to give to a friend. What a fortunate accident. This is a great read, written with the keen eye of running insider. The plot zips along and you can't wait to see how it ends. This is not just a book for runners, although they will enjoy the insider references, it is a book for anyone looking for enjoyable and well written fiction.
