Dissociation happens when we are emotionally and/or physically overwhelmed and can no longer remain consciously present. At this point another part of our mind takes over and functions for us. Once the trauma is over, we return to conscious awareness and the part of our mind that functioned for us retreats. We have no memory whatsoever of what happened when the 'part' took over. The part that receded often functions for us in dysfunctional ways. eg. making us fearful, anxious, affecting sexual issues, our biochemistry and inducing psychoses. Hence dissociation is a factor in almost all mental and many physical ailments.
