This book was exceptional and changed my life. I took it to my therapist and she is going to refer it to some of her anorexic patients. I thought i was alone, and the only one suffering and im 52 with breast cancer and Pat showed me that my thoughts are the same ones she thinks too and i no longer feel that the monster is controlling me. She has done a great service in bringing forward this hidden monster. More people need to be aware of this book---i couldnt put it down.
True Hope

People think eating disorders only affect teenagers. People believe eating disorders are vanity issues. They think eating disorders are just phases. Patricia Burkley takes a stand and tells the truth in her autobiography, Discovering the Monster Within. In this eye-opening book, Patricia, a registered nurse, and Jack Summers, M.D., Ph.D., reveal that eating disorders are real, life-threatening illnesses --- affecting people of all ages. After battling anorexia and bulimia for forty years, Patricia finally sought help for the disease at the age of sixty. Courageously fighting for recovery from her eating disorder, she is proof that even people who have struggled for many years can find freedom. Patricia gives much-needed hope to all sufferers, especially providing a unique source of inspiration to the growing number of women in our society who battle eating disorders later in life. Similar to my own recovery from anorexia and bulimia, Patricia writes about speaking out loud to the voice of the eating disorder, `ED,' that she hears in her head. As part of her recovery journey, she separates ED's voice from her own and fights for herself. I believe that Patricia will get the last word, because, similar to myself, she recognizes ED's lies today. And Patricia knows the truth. That is what Discovering the Monster Within is all about --- the truth. True encouragement. True inspiration. True hope. - Jenni Schaefer, author of Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence from her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too (McGraw-Hill)
