Students learn how to develop and organize unified essays through exploration of the principles of academic writing, critical thinking skills, rhetorical modes, and peer review.
Designed for high-intermediate to advanced nonnative speakers at the pre-freshman
composition level, Discoveries in Academic Writing examines the process of and
requirements for English academic writing in Western culture.
Nonnative speakers in academic programs often find it difficult to learn the rhetorical
styles required in Western culture. Discoveries in Academic Writing addresses this
problem by using culture-related topics and authentic academic models.
Discoveries in Academic Writing is designed to prepare nonnative speakers to develop
and organize effective English academic essays. Discoveries in Academic Writing
introduces writing at the paragraph level (150-200 words) and progresses to the
essay level (700-800 words). Students develop critical-thinking skills, learn the
major processes of writing (especially peer review and revision skills), and practice
ways to address the audience appropriately.
Each chapter contains Journal Entries (informal writing assignments), Discovery
exercises (exercises that review materials previously taught), and In-Class/Out-of-Class
Writing Assignments. Each chapter also contains lessons on sentence organization,
addressing such topics as time-shifting, old idea-new idea, and rhetorical structures.
Discoveries in Academic Writing helps students to develop study skills and prepare for
essay tests.
