A book I wish I would have written

As I hungrily browse the new release aisles I usually find nothing but detective/murder stories, political/terrorist thrillers, or stories of love lost, yawn! I'm always looking for great new novels but rarely find any that offer new ideas, life lessons, and philosophy. This book was exactly what I was looking for. It's thought provoking, challenges beliefs, and it empowered me to learn more about the economic and spiritual concepts in the book. I want to be inspired when I finished reading a book, and that's what happened when I read Discipline, thanks Paco. I can't wait for a sequel, but until then, I'll just keep rereading and rereading this one and it'll be time well spent, thanks!

An Epic Work

I confess that because of the hype I read concerning this book, I was actually looking for reasons not to rate it so highly. Initially, I thought I had several such reasons. (The language is crude and at times seems gratuitous.) But as I worked my way through the story line, I became more fascinated by how the author's many philosophies of life unfolded. I thought the book actually broke down into three distinct volumes that were roughly analogous, in order of their occurrence in the book, to; 1) Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment - the main character suffers enormous personal failure only to be redeemed by others and by grace. 2) Several volumes of Star Trek, a genre I am thoroughly unfamiliar with, but the author makes a case for the science of time travel and other fascinating concepts, and 3) The Revelation - an epic battle between good and evil where the final clash keeps playing out in variations like the movements of a symphony, the reader able to see the good within evil, and that some evil might exist in the good. Actually, in The Revelation, most readers have a good idea which force will triumph - here, it's not so sure. Altogether, a classic read you won't soon forget. How can you ask for more in a book?

Absolutely Riveting!

I loved this book! Quantum physics, economics, romance, philosophy, all meld into an excellently crafted plot. Being a geek, I was fascinated by the multiverses, bursting, etc. I was captivated from the first page to the last one. Rolled my eyes at the phone every time it rang. Great book! I'm recommending it to everyone I know who's as weird as I am. :-) Can't wait to read his next book.

Paco Ahlgren's debut effort is a thinking person's adventure story. The charm of this book doesn't end there, though; it combines elements of a coming-of-age story, a philosophical treatise, and science fiction in a smooth and extremely engaging manner. Ahlgren imbues Douglas Cole's character with a depth that is rarely seen in popular fiction. We follow his development from a promising and sympathetic young boy, to a disappointing youth, to a man with a unique vision and critical role in the future of human society. I highly recommend this book.
