Don't shy away from the homeless

What's it like to have no job, no money, no home, no permanent bed or no bed at all? How does it feel to be forced to beg for change or rummage through other people's trash? A highly praised author of six novels, Helen Hudson worked as a volunteer for two years in a soup kitchen in New Haven and Dinner at Six is the result. It's a collection of interviews with 15 people at the soup kitchen who had the courage to open up their lives to her. Hudson brings her considerable literary skill to drawing out the subjects, whose voices are surprisingly varied and eloquent. She approaches her people with enormous sensitivity and compassion. The book upends all preconceptions about homeless people. It's also a pager turner.
