I wrote a chapter about this book in Margaret Jean Hay's collection, African Novels in the Classroom ( Lynne Rienner, 2000). It is a gripping 'true' story about ordinary life in extraordinary times and the courage of ordinary people. The book provides a lens into day to day struggles in apartheid S'rn Africa, but also confronts us with issues about how author Elsa Joubert went about telling the story of Poppie Nongena. I have taught this book often and my students really learned from it and liked it. Women tended to like the book more than men. I wish it would be republished. JmPenvenne
