I bought this book as a present to my brother in law, since I read it and it is quite an impressive book. Tells the story of the Jewish people with wide view of time and location. It feels so true... By the way his brothers (Isaac) book the slave is recommended as well (one of the best books I ever read.

A moving, captivating story without melodrama

A fine book. The story of Jews in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century is well-drawn, if familiar. The characters are interesting and have grace to them. There are many funny moments as the multi-generational story is told. I was afraid this book would turn into an overwhelmingly sad Holocaust drama, where the reader watched as all the main characters perished, but Singer had too much taste for that, and the story carries you fully to the end of the book. Well worth the read.
