Die fremde Braut as literature for advanced German contemporary lit class

Die fremde Braut is a great book if you are looking for an inside view to a current hot topic in German culture: the integration problem. The great thing about this book is that it is written by a Turkish woman and follows her life as an Muslim woman who moved to Germany at a young age. Her father moves the family to German when he becomes a Gast-Arbeiter, a guest worker, brought to Germany in the 50's and 60's to fill in the holes in the German work force due to a declining population. This book is a great story and the reading is moderate in vocabulary intensity for a 3rd year or 4th year advanced German student. The main reason I don't give this book 5 stars is that because the author, and this has a been a common criticism for this book, is that she confuses Turkish cultural tradition with Muslim religious practices, clouding how she portrays these traditions. It is hard to distinguish the reasons behind how some things are done as tradition, or as religion. Being that I'm not German, or Muslim, I find this lacking and hard to attribute certain problems to a cultural or religious reason. I want to know more of why things are that way- tradition or religion? Overall I am thoroughly enjoying this book. The other contemporary book we are going to be reading for this class is Inci Y.'s Erstickt an euren Lugen:Eine Turkin in Deutschland erzahlt. (umlaut over u in Lugen & Turkin, and the a in erzahlt) and I look forward to reading that book and comparing & contrasting it to this one.
