After three missionary lessons, Steve's investigation of the Church was brought to a screeching halt by his father, who would not allow him to step away from his family's tradition of Catholicism. Steve was forbidden even to talk about the Church while his father was around. Over the next four years, his father did everything in his power to discourage Steve's pursuit of this new religion. When Steve reached the age of eighteen, he had to make a decision.
