My favorite French/English "pocket" dictionary

This is the biggest little French/English pocket dictionary you might ever find. It is my favorite because it is nearly as thorough (for all practical purposes) as my Larousse desk dictionary, but not nearly so big, heavy, or tedious. Mind you, somtimes I want completeness in a definition, but this Cambridge Klett (which I spent about half an hour at the Harvard COOP bookstore selection, weeding out the useless hip-pocket types and competitors clearly not in it's league) is just right - complete enough for any but a hardcore scholar, but physically more comfortable to use, to carry around (in a backpack or case). It has tables of verbs, maps, pages of colored illustrations, useful phrases, examples of letters, phonetic symbols. It is in two color text - words in blue and explanations in black. Small point, but useful. It has small call-outs about francophone culture. And, lest I forget, it has faux-amis pages. This is the most dictionary you are going to get for your money. Published by the Cambridge University Press. I expect to buy another copy so one is always at my elbow when I need it. Tirez le meilleur parti de soi-même!

Cambridge Klett Compact Hardcover Dictionary

When I saw this in a local bookstore, it really stood out from the usual suspects. Having seen this book and noticed its qualities, I also now better appreciate the importance of not purchasing a dictionary on-line without seeing, holding it and handling it first. At $20.00 local retail, it seemed like a very good buy; if only $13.00 on-line it's terrific. In particular, I liked the fonts used in this book, one that I would buy for classroom and homework use, as well as for the hotel room when I travel. Compared to the pocket-sized dictionaries this one will be a joy to use, if a bit heavy for the day pack. The larger paper-back dictonaries do not seem to share the same excellent paper and type design. It is also thumb-indexed, but instead of those distracting, deep cutouts, each letter is indexed only with printing on the edge of the book. I am still loooking for the "perfect" French dictionary for general use, but I can't imageine one better than this for my routine personal and business needs. Oh, it may be 1/6 the volume and weight of that very large LaRousse that French majors would buy - and rarely be able carry.
