Shows works of surrealism and fantasy, offers brief profiles of notable artists, and defines terms, concepts, and movements. This description may be from another edition of this product.
Fantastic Art is a genre which includes in its repertoire the art of the Symbolists (eg Jean Delville), some of the Surrealists (Salvador Dali), some artists of the Romantic era (Fuseli), and members of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism and others, from, Hieronymus Bosch to M. C. Escher and H. R. Giger. You will find entries for all of these artists along with many more (as well as other less known artists like Johfra and Oelze) in this compact palm-sized book. There is not much good information on Fantastic Art in print. What does exist is overwhelmingly not fantastic but kitsch which is misdefined as "Fantastic" (eg what Arnie Fenner presents in "Spectrum" is NOT fantastic). This book is an exception. It provides an excellent introduction to a subject which is in sore need of more books. Beautiful art is reproduced which makes you wish for more. The blurb on the back of this book reads: "Welcome to a world of dreams and terror! Five hundred years of fantastic visions - from the hellish landscapes of Hieronymus Bosch to the works of today's masters - are compressed into this fascinating and comprehensive reference book. Separate sections on artists and subject matter feature incisive, fact-filled entries alphabetically arranged for convenience. The 124 illustrations [39 in colour] depict the grotesque, nightmarish, and boldly imaginative qualities of fantastic art through the ages."
