Diary of a Harlem School Teacher

It makes me cry. I wanted to read this book for so long, but it took years to locate it. When I finally did, I got to see another side to Jim Haskins. When I knew him, he was my professor in college. He was a father figure to me, as well as the best teacher. I learned so much history from him as I did about Literature and Writing. He was a funny man that always made me laugh and look deeper into myself. After reading this book I see some of what he saw in me as his student, and reaffirms that he did care about me and the rest of his students, he went above and beyond. I miss him, but because of thisbook, part of him will always be with me.

Haskin's account of a harlem school is mesmerizing

After reading this book in one night, I can say that I was completely mesmerized by what I was reading. Haskin's account of teaching in Harlem shows the disheartening truths of life for children in Harlem. He captures your attention, and takes you on a journey through a normal school year. Everything you have thought might happen in these types of deprived schools, is affirmed by Haskins in this diary. The journal will amaze you in the way that you will wonder how one man could continue to fight for children with everything going against him. In his day-to-day account, Haskins gives the reader a full description of the children, parents and teachers he comes into contact with during his time teaching. Not only did this book give me in full detail, a image of Harlem's schools, but it also gave me inspiration. Anyone who believes in the power children have, should read this book. It is an inspiration for those who want to touch the lives of all children. You will continue to turn pages in this book with ease, as Haskins' style is attention catching.
