Slattery is a gem

While Slattery has clearly spent some time in the clubhouse, writing down all the rich interplay of one-liners he could gather, the meat of this thing is a protagonist whos made mistakes and is healing himself every day out on the diamond. In baseball, you don't have to be the biggest or the fastest, you just have to be good. And anyone can get good if they want it bad enough. Perhaps it is the code that keeps us rapt. You hit my pitcher, I'm gonna hit your pitcher, it's clannish yet ethical, simple. If an opposing batter charges the mound you'd better run off the bench and be prepared to defend your pitcher, to line up and participate in the time-honored tradition of the bench clearing brawl. Or you're not part of the team, and potentially downright un-American. All these lessons are in there and a great deal more to do with the human side of our flawed yet irrepressible anti-hero.
