Steve Van der Walt, a South African detective, signs a contract with the De Beers diamond mining company in Kimberley, Eastern Cape.

His mission is to seek out and apprehend a gang of diamond thieves who are gradually draining the mining company dry. He is aided in the venture by his Brazilian secretary Jarla, and wine growing friend Johannes Oosthuizen from the Cape. The gang of thieves are headed by a professional criminal named Viktor Mendowski, a fugitive from Lithuania who keeps a vicious hyena as a constant pet.

Among the terrible dangers facing Steve are his English neighbours from London, who are the icing on a very chaotic cake. Victoria Falls might beckon but who exactly - or maybe what exactly - will fall over the Falls?
