A book as serious as a heart attack, as light as a feather.

What the hell, four stars fits the book's own symbolism, but the quality is 4.5. First, the fellow can write. Syntax that dances, fresh, metaphorical writing. Second, he writes about what matters. Finally, he entertains. I read 50-60 novels a year, maybe ten of them "serious." In a typical year, this one would rate one or two.
