A brave viewpoint

Johnson wrote this book as a member of an "intentional community" (i.e., a group of Christian pacifists who had decided to move to a number of houses in the same neighborhood) in a downtrodden section of Evanston, IL. The era was the late 1970s (the book carries a copyright date of 1981.) As might be expected, members of this community soon found themselves the target of crime--violent and otherwise. Trusting in their Mennonite faith, community members decided to craft a means of responding to crime, and the threat of crime, without resort to violent resistance, and eventually without calling upon the police and criminal justice system for protection. This is the purest of pacifist positions, and seemingly impossible to sustain, but apparently they have managed. The Reba Place Fellowship celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007. [...]
