Devotion to the Nine Choirs of the Angels

Heaven is not an abstraction, but an ordered communion of creatures who adore God and cooperate with His providence; in invoking them, the faithful ask to be guided toward holiness, learning from what each choir reflects of God: burning love, contemplation, justice, fortitude, and guardianship. This vision was revalued by Saint Gregory the Great (6th century) and, with nuances, remained in force throughout the Middle Ages, although it was more strongly debated beginning with Humanism.

Later, Saint Thomas Aquinas took up Pseudo-Dionysius in his "Treatise on the Angels" within the Summa Theologiae, consolidating the reading of heaven as a hierarchical order in which some angels "assist" (oriented to praise) and others "minister" (carrying out providences in the governance of the world). In the Christian tradition, the Nine Choirs are grouped into three hierarchies and nine orders: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones; Dominions, Virtues, Powers; Principalities, Archangels, and Angels.
