The #1 New York Times bestselling author's first historical romance. Kidnapped and taken to the beautiful city of Genoa, Cassie Brougham finds love in the arms of her captor, while she is betrothed to another man.
I have to admit this is not one of authors best. The story was brutal but the timeline was the 1700s. Women had no identify other thañ what was allowed by men who ruled. Women rarely owned property in their own right and many times did not choose their husbands. My dislike of the book is based on the h/h. The hero never admits his actions caused all the conflicts.
Riveting

From everyone else's reviews, it seems that this book rubbed raw on some of their sensibilities. I agree that the rape scene was very graphic and maybe somewhat unnecessary, but a reader has to take the time period into consideration. Not only the time period, but the area that the story took place in. In those days, in that area of the world, men were barbarians and women were for the most part quite submissive. I give Ms Coulter Kudos for making Cassie such a strong-willed girl. For me, it was an awesomely written book. This is the first book I have read by Ms Coulter, and I am now reading "Devil's Daughter", the sequel. I have all of her books and am looking forward to reading the rest.
I love this book. !!!

It's true, I did get very mad a few times, but I was not bored for one second. I could not put it down. You have to read this book...you will never forget this story.
Regency Romance Read

I just finished this book and am now on the sequel (Devil's Daughter). I couldn't put it down. I read it in 1 day. (actually less than)I have never reread a novel by anyone before, but I can say without a doubt, I will be rereading this one. I do agree that the gang rape was repulsive and I almost couldn't go on reading, but I'm so glad I did. I just kept in perspective the fact that women in that era were seen as little above animals by men/Lords. The fact that he allowed Cassie to have her tantrums and waspish tongue and the fact that he always made sure she had her pleasure first made it all worth while for me.
Give it a chance

I was truly astonished by all the negative reviews on this wonderful book. So ok he kidnaps her and he takes her virginty, I have read probably over a hundred romance novels have seen many rapes and kidnappings. For the reviewer who said that she stopped reading after the rape, and that this was her last Coulter novel, bad things happen in real life and even in romance it is what the characters do after the hardships is what makes the story interesting. If you only read the rape and wrote the book off you missed a very loving story about a man who loves a woman enough to do whatever it takes to make it work. If you want to read a romance about love with a bit of the real world tossed in you should give this novel a fair chance, you might enjoy it.
Wonderful and Truly Moving...

In spite of what others may say about this book I loved it. I understand why everyone didnt like Anthony, he is a bit of a cad but I felt from the beginning he did truly love Cassandra and knew what was best for her. He was there for her when she was taken by the 'bravi'. He didnt push her or force her into the marriage after that happened. Even before that he didnt force her to wed him but wanted her to find her love for him and marry him, but he put his feelings aside until she was ready. She realized how much she did love him when she found the letters and thought of his betryal, he went to her, took off to America to find her and he did. He fought a duel for her, wanted her for himself, that to me speaks of love. If he didnt love her he would have just grabbed her by the arm and taken her back to Italy. He wanted her to come of her own accord. I was sad to see the book end. I loved thier love story and wanted more. I cant wait to read the sequel - Devils Daughter. I was hooked to this book from the beginning and again read it in a day. It was wonderful, the turns in this book were a little predictable but the reactions from the characters were not and that was wonderful. I definatly give it 5 stars and will be reading it again!
