I purchased this book for my Father as a Father's Day present in 1981, and it became mine with his passing. This is a very good E. E. Halleran book about building a railroad through the mountains. Quincy was the railroad agent who had to see that it got built despite those opposed to it. Margaret O'Hara--Peggy--becomes the love interest and she is a business woman who knows timber. A former girl friend, Elinor Kell now, is aboard the construction car with her husband and Jack Quincy can't get her out of his head at the beginning of the book. But Quincy knows if they can get to Devil's Canyon the race to complete the road is won; the trouble was getting there and then holding it long enough to get the rails laid. He knew the battle would be a tough one and he had found more enemies than he could recall, even a man he'd once called his friend.
