Dave Bonner headed out of Ocotillo flats for Pitchfork Ranch with his six-gun, his buckskin horse, and $3,000 worth of his neighbors' cattle-buying cash......Thorndike Large Print This description may be from another edition of this product.
This western began as an original Ace Books, Inc., mass paperback publication back in the year 1967. A fairly typical, formulaic western that in the hands of Ray Hogan becomes enjoyable. But ACE had a talent for publishing very readable westerns, sometimes combining two novels within one cover and at a very inexpensive price of .35 cents. Those days are certainly long gone, never to return. Dave Bonner is carrying a money belt of $3000.00 on a journey to purchase cattle for his home ranch and several other ranchers. Along the way, he is robbed and left for dead by 4 men laying in wait. His money, guns, and horse are all gone and he has to travel a stretch of desert before lucking into a town. The remainder of this little less than 150 page novel is concerned with Dave finding the men who stole from him, while at the same time recovering the life savings those 3000 dollars represent to several of Dave's neighbors. In typical Ray Hogan style a somewhat overused theme becomes an enjoyable read, with the characters having life blown into them through Mr. Hogan's talent. One big city newspaper once said that Alistair MacLean had "a huge talent" concerning his books, well, the same can easily be stated about all Ray Hogan westerns. Read one and you too just might be hooked to read others. Semper Fi.
