Development of the mathematical explanation of vision

The eye is one of the most important organs in our awareness of the environment. Its function is largely linked to the retina. A thorough understanding of the retina is therefore crucial to a more enlightened understanding of the process behind vision. Many studies have been carried out on the retina, and different researchers have proposed different interpretations of the arrangement of the cells or neurons that make it up. However, an explanation of the different types and number of retinal cell types had not yet been provided. The innovative approach used in this study combines biology and mathematics.By observing retinal slice diagrams and cell arrangements on the one hand, and reading researchers' interpretations of retinal structure on the other, we have developed a (mathematical) theory that explains the number of retinal cell types, provides a better understanding of their interactions, and enables us to learn more about their roles.
