A Great Beginning Reader and Grammar

I have been studying the German language now for well over 30 years. I have studyied here in California earning my B.A. with honors in 1986 at CSUN. I have dne grad work at UCLA's Dept. of GErmanic Languages. I have studied in Germany at The Goethe Insitut and Schiller ollege in Heidelberg.I taught German for several years at many ifferent levels. But I will never forget my earliest years at L.A. Pierce College and the first two (difficult) years. In our fourth semester we used "Deutsche Literature von Heute" It was a breath of fresh air. Reason: The 3rd semester (or 4th quarter/2nd year) we had used a small reader which had short stories which, although based on real stories (Fairy Tales like "Literatur Eins") were changed in order to fit the particcular grammar and vocabulary to be learned for that chapter. That is, if the text chapter was reviewing The Past Perfect, then the entire story was told in the past perfect using the vocabulary words which they wanted you to learn at that point. Don't get me wrong. This is a good method and works well. It is even somewhat enjoyable to read. (Tons better than the first year stuff, which was totally made up and sounded something like: Wilhem: "I have lost my black eyeglasses, Maria." Maria: Why don't you wear your brown pair?" Wihelm:"That is a good idea. You are very helpful, Mary." I think you get the point. Not a story you can't put down! But D.L.v.H. was different. The short stories were real. They were written by young (mostly, I think) contemorary writers who wrote about real and controversial issues which made you think. The authors were careful to find stories which would be easy to read, interesting, and introduce grammar. Of couse, not being edited meant that side notes for difficult words and footnotes for difficult phrases were needed. And although this adds a little time and makes the reading a little more tedious, the explanations are VERY well done and a complete dictionary of words in the stories is included. This just means, (to me it did)that in the long run you learn more, faster, and enjoy reading and discussing the stories in class. There are Topics for discussion after each story. The second half of the book is an excellent grammar review which is based around the stories as opposed to vise-versa.And very good excersises, as well. I would definately say that, reletively speaking, I learned more deutsch that semester than ANY other. Today, I have a German Library of over 500 books easily. And I still keep "Deutsche Lit. von Heute." on the shelf. And yes I even read a story in it for the fifth time every once in a while. (Sometimes I keep books like that in the bathroom!) Its very beat up. The cover is gone. But I'll never part with it. I highly recommend this book for any 2rd year student of German.
