Destination Korea

Destination Korea is an eye witness account of the daily life of servicemen in the Korean War. It consists of letters written by a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army to his wife while he was stationed in Okinawa and Korea during the Korean War. Through a collaborative effort between the author of the letters, Dana Abbot Curtis, and his granddaughter, Jennifer R. Willand Dillard, they give an accurate account of the life of an infantryman and combat engineer ordered to fight in Korea.

Destination Korea

When I first bought this book it was because the author was a professor of mine and I thought that it would be nice to have Dr. Dillard autograph it for me. Once the book arrived and I began reading it I became so immersed into the letters that had been written by her grandfather I could not put the book down. I finished the book in two readings and found myself shocked and greatly saddened when the book ended. I am a History major and I would say that any serious student of military history, or just history in general should read this book, I consider this a must read for students of the Korean War.

Its a very "human" book

This novel is a fine book discussing the emotions of a 1st Lt in the US army during the Korean War. Its not a book about violence or bravery -- but rather a novel that looks at the very being of this man, Dana Curtis. It really focuses on his seperation from his family, and what keeps him going -- so i take it back, i guess it does talk about his bravery; his bravery to keep alive to see his wife and children again. It gets a little too mushy sometimes, but its not made up; these are the actual letters sent from Lt Curtis to his wife, and the honesty of the book is refreshing. You could say this novel is a sort of love story. I'm a big fan of war movies and stories that portray the horrors or true warfare, and this is one of those stories. There is no heroic main character who defies all odds to save everyone -- this is a story about a man who just wants to get back to his wife and kids in one piece. Its also interesting because this novel was written by the main characters grand-daughter.
