A sex scandal, a pair of shootings, and internal racism complicate the quest of a previously obscure college football team to achieve an epic bowl game victory. African American alumni leader Arthur Allenby and white counselor Malcolm Wade join forces to help the CSU team surmount these and other obstacles while struggling to salvage their own embattled romantic relationships. The novel celebrates interracial friendships and emerging leadership opportunities for African Americans but ridicules the hypocrisy of academic administrators who overpay job-hopping head coaches while ignoring the deficiencies of underprepared student-athletes. The snarky romances in the subplot aim to entice sensible readers to curl up with this book in the comfort of hearth and home in late November/early December while the cavemen/chestpainters freeze their nipples off at the game.
