Following the American Civil War, Cody leaves Ohio for the Pajarito Plateau of Northern New Mexico after his wife is murdered and his house is burned to the ground by former friends from the War. Living mostly alone he discovers a new way of life and a completely different culture than what he accustomed to, but it is a way of life that is agreeable to him. With the exception of an occasional visit from Sam Nez, a member of one of the local pueblos, Cody is enjoying life the way he likes it--alone in the company of his horse and mule.Thoughts of Ellie, his wife, continue to run through his mind as he tends to his new property, but soon those thoughts are interrupted by a series of coincidences that lead him to believe that he is being pursued by a shape shifter.
