Book Overview

The Autobiography of the First Designated Hitter to Play in the MLB--Now in Paperback

On April 6, 1973, Ron Blomberg took a swing at home plate that changed baseball history. Through a quirk of fate the young Jewish Yankee became the first designated hitter to play an MLB game. At the time, George Steinbrenner had just taken control of the Bronx Bombers, the National League was still refusing to adopt the DH rule, and New Yorkers were pinning their hopes on a new generation of players. In this heart-warming autobiography, now in paperback, Blomberg relives the moment that made his career and the countless experiences before and after that helped boost him to legendary heights.

In Designated Hebrew, Blomberg recounts a time when baseball and America itself were changing. Before Blomberg arrived in New York, the Yankees only employed three Jews in the entire organization. Though his career goals were eventually thwarted by injury, Blomberg still represented hope and pride to millions of Americans across the country. This unforgettable story is the journey of one man as he learns to balance life, religion, and ultimately, baseball.

THIS BOOK IS A DESIGNATED READ

I REALLY LIKED THIS STORY OF FORMER MAJOR LEAGUER RON BLOMBERG. HE DOES A GOOD JOB AS WE LEARN SOME OF THE ANTI JEW THAT WAS AROUND BACK IN THE 1970'S AND OF TODAY. RON'S CAREER WAS CUT SHORT BY 2 VERY SERIOUS INJURIES. A KNEE AND A ROTATER CUFF DID HIM IN. IN TODAY'S MEDICINE HE WOULD BE ABLE TO OVERCOME THESE AND CONTINUE WITH HIS CAREER. RON WAS A GOOD HITTER WITH ALOT OF POWER. HE CLAIMS TO HAVE HIT A BALL THAT ALOMOST WENT OUT OF OLD YANKEE STADIUM, A FEAT WHICH WAS NEVER DONE. HE ALWAYS HIT FOR A HIGH AVERAGE, BUT HAD A REPUTATION HE COULD NOT HIT WELL AGAINST LEFTY PITCHERS. AS A RESULT HE WAS A PLATOON PLAYER AT DH, 1ST BASE AND OUTFIELD. I REMEMBER HIM GETTING ALOT OF PUBLICITY AS THE VERY 1ST DH AS IT WENT INTO EFFECT IN 1973. ALSO BEING JEWISH, HE WAS QUITE POPULAR WITH THE JEWISH FANS IN NY. SADLY AFTER HIS INJURIES, RON PLAYED A FEW YEARS AFTER HE LEFT THE YANKEES AND RETIRED. HE ALSO COVERS HIS LIFE AFTER BASEBALL AND WHAT HE IS DOING TODAY. I RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL YANKEE AND FANS OF JEWISH ATHLETES.

Very good book except Ronnie never played football in high school or ran track. Other than that, interesting story.
