Charlotte was once a happy Navajo girl. She loved playing with her dolls, and she loved running around in the warm sun, playing with the many children on the Navajo Reservation where she grew up. That was until someone she trusted made her very, very uncomfortable. When the authorities get involved, she is sent to live with her grandfather in rural Oklahoma. He is a very kind man to her, ensuring that she is happy and well fed. Charlotte also meets Timmy, who is a year younger than her. After several late-night talks, Charlotte discovers that Timmy is living in an extreme state of poverty. It is the kind that leaves him acting secretive, afraid, and fearful for his life. Later, when a tornado and an accident in the bathtub almost land them each in foster homes, they must figure out how to survive as homeless orphans in the harsh rural southwest.
