The past century has witnessed some of the most grueling, bloody and traumatizing wars in history. Political, ideological, and sociological impacts of war are considered, discussed and extrapolated, facts and figures circulate through books and media. But the realities of war for anyone living in a combat zone are vastly different from the way we experience them though news, books and documentaries.War is devastating, and for children growing up during a war, the effects are life-changing and, sadly, sometimes fatal. This book examines the literary and cinematic depictions of children in times of war, whether as civilians, prisoners or soldiers. The book begins with three famous memoirs of life during war: "The Diary of Anne Frank," "Night" and "Zlata's Diary." Next, we examine works of fiction which give us glimpses into the impact of war, either local or abroad, on day to day life through such works as "The Kite Runner," "The Silver Sword," The American Girl series and "Carrie's War." Our literary tour concludes with a chapter on child soldiers featuring "Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" and two other novels. Finally, we examine four documentaries depicting the horrors of childhood spent during a war.
