VICIOUS THIRD WORLD DICTATOR

A fascinating insight into a dictator's mind through his own diaries, as the author of this book, Wiliam C. Rempel, developed for the LA Times in 1988. It clearly shows Marcos' towering ego, his fear of betrayal and paranoia, and his inability to deal realistically and fairly with an escating opposition to his despotic rule. We also see an emerging egocentric wife Imelda and her own abuse of power and her out-of-control spending habits while thousands were starving. The Filipinos finally got rid of Marcos after 14 years through People Power. Of course, his two-year affair with American actress Dovie Beams, complete with hidden tapes and photos, gave great fodder to the tabloids, and really ticked off Imelda. Another good read is Hermie Rotea's "Marcos'Lovey Dovie" This is an old book "Delusions," copyright 1993, but none-the-less, very interesting and an example of democracy finally over-powering an oppressive regime. The 8-pages of photos also add to the book's historical significance.
