Despite growing up at the height of the Great Depression Thomas Whitney has led a life of leisure that involved private school, family trips to Europe and a distinguished college football career. All that changed when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and he became a fighter pilot in the US Army Air Corps and was dispatched to Europe to help stop Hitler and free the oppressed continent. On one such mission Lieutenant Whitney finds himself shot down in occupied France with German soldiers teeming everywhere and is forced to escape and evade capture. Along the way he meets Rebecca Couture, a refugee also trying to get to the Swiss border where freedom awaits. Despite at times butting heads the two help each other out and during their time on the lam look back and reflect as to how exactly they ended up where they were as it wasn't that long before they both lived privileged lives in their respective countries.
