Writing poetry has helped me to slow down. In fact, this is the reason I became interested in the craft. Like most people, I find life be fast and frantic, but working on a sestina or villanelle cannot be hurried and, thus, requires patience. It starts with pen and paper, followed by scratch-outs, the passage of days, then back to the paper, and more lines added or deleted. Finally, after weeks, the poem is typed, only to be massaged again into its final form.Slower is better. Poems need to marinate.Whether you enjoy poems of prayer and reflection, a sonnet on relationships, or just a verse to make you smile, Delight Yourself may have something for you. At best, I am a "Bogey Poet," but with the help of my wife's photography, I hope we have created something worthy of your coffee table.
