Deforestation and Land Degradation in Tajikistan

The Republic of Tajikistan is a Central Asian country and its 93 per cent area is mountainous. Tajikistan is an agriculture oriented country. After the independence of Tajikistan following the disintegration of former USSR in 1991, the energy supply to the country was stopped. The need of energy has been one of the biggest challenges of the country since its independence in early 1990s. N.S. Jodha in his article entitled, "Common property resources and rural people in dry region" has said that the sustainable use of energy resources in semi-arid rural mountain areas is a common, yet still unresolved, problem . Further, P. Kadian says that the use of local energy resources in arid areas often results in environmental degradation .
