D. is a good prose writer. Every serious civil war historian has different insights into persons and events. This deals with more than military history. The author has a biographical orientation and identifies strengths and weaknesses of the various figures. He focuses upon Jn Breckinridge, about whom he has written a bio. D. identifies B. as a moderate. Such his temperment may have been, but B. represented extremists. Although he offers the usual Confederate misrepresentation of the Lecompton Constitution and a few other matters, D. is generally fair. Not the first book to read about the civil war, but a good choice for buffs.
