Mystical caves deep within a tall, unnamed mountain change Cleo Stafford's life forever. He is a good man, but not great. He carries guilt, grudges, cowardice and other faults, along with a lot of self doubt. He has convinced himself that climbing this unique mount will somehow provide answers to his problems with his broken self. The subterranean caverns reveal to him a series of visions of key events from earlier in his life, and he learns a great deal about himself. He finds ways to make stark attitude adjustments and changes in his personality. In short, he becomes a new man. In the process of getting him to the mountain, Cleo, his wife Celeste and the Stafford family have humorous and stressful adventures in camping and family vacations, including an ill-fated Disneyland venture, during which Cleo and the three youngest, including a nursing baby, are separated for hours from Celest and the older children. They experience the Night of the Bear along the way. Cleo is an attorney, and included in the cave visions are courtroom dramas.
