DECEPTIVE VOWS REVISED EDITION is an enhanced version of Gary's novel, which was called Deceptive Vows. It's a realistic drama about domestic violence, following Patricia's tumultuous marriage to Andre. Ignoring warnings from friends and family, Patricia marries Andre after six months and overlooks early signs of abuse. The story begins with Patricia in prison for killing Andre and recounts her experiences during group therapy as part of a state-mandated program. As she tells her powerful story, flashbacks reveal the abuse and events leading to the tragedy. Originally written as a play by Gary Tavares under the title "Until Death do us Part," it was performed in Oakland, CA., in 2000 and had an encore presentation in 2001. Gary later adapted it into an award-winning screenplay and an award-winning short film, both titled Deceptive Vows.
