I first read this book in the library and knew I wanted it for my own. It is worth tracking down to buy. Snyder uses exerpts from newspapers of the 19th century to tell the story of how Christmas was: the food markets, the holly and garland sellers, the beleaguered shopgirls who worked until midnight on Christmas Eve, sleigh rides on snowy Christmas days, etc. His prose is vivid and can warm your heart as well as making you feel for the working class stiffs who had to toil to make Christmas merry. His descriptions of the food markets will make you hungry!
