Death's Deliverer (The Southwest Destiny Series)

By Brenda Vigil

Death isn't in the habit of sowing lives, but when she sees prematurely-born Margarita's strong will to live, she spares the child by giving her a special mark and indenturing her as a Deliverer. Tia Antonia raises Margarita, and it isn't until she's thirteen that the sight of a beaten neighbor incites the girl's first feelings of vengeance and awakens her to serve Death. With the help of Tia and wise but mysterious Do?a Chencha, Margarita learns about her power to summon vindictive Furiosas to collect evil souls. She is soon faced with using her ability and confronting her own vengeful nature, El Desquite. After experiencing her first reap, she is shaken and vows never again to use her call, but ten years later, she is compelled to deliver a woman from the grip of her odious husband. As Margarita's contempt flares, she discovers a bond between her and the lead Furiosa, The Long-Haired One. To complicate matters, she must also contend with her budding feelings for Elias, the vendor who livens more than just her day. As Margarita embraces her destiny, she walks a fine line between delivering justice and losing her own soul.
