When the popular merchant Malcolm O'Sullivan was murdered assistant procurator Hugh Lamont got his first chance to solve a major crime. He successfully proved that Malcolm's business rival Keane Murphy killed him, but after the trial a court guard is killed with a message left on the body that Keane was wronged.
Hugh sets out to find out who was responsible and that leads him to a surprising conclusion. Having staked his reputation on his next arrest another court official is found dead leaving Hugh facing the end of his career and the possibility that the next target could be himself.
